Gladstone Green House

Gladstone Green House design embodies principles of energy efficiency and use of sustainable and enduring materials.

A palette of familiar and robust materials such as polished local concrete, pine ply, aluminum, cedar weatherboards, fibre Cement sheet, and corrugated steel that was chosen  to generate a sense of elegance and integrity.

The concrete floor holds the low horizontal form of the house firmly on the shingle river terrace.

A solid wall to the south has a single central opening through to the glazed entry, which bisects the living and sleeping areas.

The cedar and aluminums form a series of vertical panels giving a rhythm to the north façade and repeated visual connection between interior and exterior environment. The living spaces open to views encompassing the seasonal changes of grapevines on the river terrace to the North West, a wetland, willows and rolling farmland to the north.

This luxury Gladstone Green House was designed as a Bach which could become a more permanent residence should its retired owners subsequently chooses.

The living spaces run across the full depth of the house to capture the sun and hills to the north and the beautiful views of the extraordinary to the south, and to allow plenty of cross airing in Central Otago's stifling summer heat.

The bedroom wing provides ample Accommodation for the recede and flow of summer guests and family, and the living spaces are constructed to allow the relaxation required of holiday lifestyles.

Mckenzie-Higham Architecture intention was to create a beautiful and modest place of retreat for a couple and their adult children responsive to the rural context.

The home is designed to work for a couple or a crowd, for contemplation, entertaining or rural work.
